Dear Disney,
Been a while. How have you been? I hear the new canon is going pretty well. People love how you continually borrow from the Expanded Universe and not just for the books either! You’ve done it for comics, TV Shows, video games and even movies! You must be so proud of your creative think tank over at Lucasfilm! I can’t wait to see which story from the Old Canon they retell next!
Anyway, I thought I’d give you an update on what’s new with me these days since you canceled the “Legends” story line.
You see, before all that happened I was spending hundreds of dollars a year (sometimes over a thousand even) on your products. I bought not only the adult novels, but the young adult and children’s novels as well. I bought comics, games, roleplaying sourcebooks, regular sourcebooks, Star Wars guides and even subscribed to the Star Wars Insider!
I have 3 bookshelves just full of Star Wars content, but when you did away with it all and substituted it for the re-boot, I didn’t have anything of interest to spend my money on.
That’s when I discovered my next new hobby…board games. I can’t tell you how thankful I am for being the reason I got more involved in the hobby. Now my hundreds of dollars (which over the past few years since the discontinuation of Legends has totaled into the thousands) is now being spent on board games. I couldn’t be happier!
Now my time is spent playing game with my wife, my nephews and even a weekly gaming group that comes over every week. So much fun!
But that’s not all! In addition to having all this extra money to spend, I now find myself getting the opportunity to check out other books outside of Star Wars. So far I’ve read the entire "John Carter of Mars" series, a few Tolkien books on Middle Earth, the entire run of Sherlock Holmes stories, Kevin J Anderson’s sequel trilogy to the "Saga of the Seven Suns", both Spartacus books, a few non-fiction books as well as autobiographies and some classic novels such as "Last of the Mohicans" and "Robin Hood".
I even got to read the novel "Jaws" along with "Jurassic Park" and "Lost World". And dare I mention the “Schools of Dune” trilogy too? The list goes on and on and that’s all thanks to you!
But that’s still not all! With all my free time not being spent on countless hours of pouring over Expanded Universe content I’ve also found myself spending more time outside. Going on long walks, writing 5 more dinner theatre plays and even lending an hand at writing an essay for a book about the Legends universe. It’s been an absolute delight to see how I’ve grown creatively on my own. I highly suggest you try it some time.
Well, I have to go. See what other items are out there on the internet, ready to take my money. Hope you’re having a great summer, I know I am!
