Character spotlight: Darth Malgus

Born as Veradun, was born within Imperial Space in 3701 B.B.Y on the planet Dromund Kaas. Veradun was raised by an adoptive father who was a biologist and ran a zoo on another planet but received funding for it from the Sith Empire. Veradun would begin to show his strength in the Force even from a very young age. After killing a twi’lek that had an offense, his adoptive father sent his son to be trained at the Sith Academy on the Dromund Kaas.

Veradun was eventually apprenticed to the Sith pure-blood, Vindican. While on the planet Geonosis, Veradun would eventually come across a twi’lek slave named Eleena. She was abused and beaten by her master, and the Sith killed the master due to his behaviors. While Eleena was technically Veradun’s slave, they became lovers and he began to consider her as his wife. It was at this time that he renamed himself, Malgus.

In 3681 B.B.Y, the Sith empire reclaimed the Sith holy world, Korriban. Vindican and Malgus took a Fury-class Imperial Interceptor and landed on the Republic orbital station above the planet. The Sith exited the ship and confronted the two Jedi Kao Cen Darach and Satele Shan in lightsaber combat.

While the two Jedi fought the Sith, the smuggler Nico Okarr and republic trooper Jace Malcom, attempted to start their ship to escape. Darach ordered Shan to board and let him defend them. Shan tossed Darach her double bladed lightsaber as the ship took off, and he engaged both Sith. Vindican was injured in the lightsaber fight and Malgus, using the Force, summoned his master’s lightsaber to him and killed Darach.

While the rest had escaped, Vindican came to, and was mocked by Malgus for failing to keep the survivors from escaping, he then ignited his lightsaber and killed his master. Malgus believed that he would be the one that would end the Republic and the Jedi Order that protected it.

Malgus would eventually gain the title of “Darth” and would then lead an attack on Alderaan. It was during this attack that Malgus and his troops would encounter Havoc Squad, led by Jace Malcom, and engaged in battle with them. Malgus was easily able to defeat Malcom and his troops and before he could execute the Republic soldier, Satele Shan, who was now a full-fledged Jedi Knight, arrived and saved him.

Malgus and Shan entered an intense lightsaber duel. During the duel, Malgus was horribly scarred and was then crushed by a cliff as Shan used the Force to bring it down upon the Sith Lord. As the Sith escaped, he encountered two other Jedi on the planet before he departed. The injuries that he received on the planet were severe and to make matters worse, his lungs were severely damaged. Malgus was forced to wear a respirator mask to help his breathing and jaw wounds.

In 3653 B.B.Y, the Empire approached the Republic about a peace treaty. The Republic began to consider it as they thought it might be a perfect way to end all the conflict. However, it was merely a distraction for the Sith to target the Capital on Coruscant. Malgus was selected by Darth Angral to lead an attack on the Jedi Temple. This became known as the Sacking of Coruscant.

Malgus approached the temple with Eleena by his side. Shae Vizla, a bounty hunter hired by the Sith, disabled the defense Grid of Coruscant. The Sith Lord and his lover entered the Jedi Temple. Master Ven Zallow, and 5 other Jedi met him and were shocked when a transport craft crashed in to the temple and revealed 50 Sith Warriors. The Jedi and Sith began to engage each other in combat and Malgus eventually ended up in a duel with Zallow. Zallow proved to be a worthy opponent, however, he was still no match for Malgus as he was stabbed in the abdomen.

By the end of the attack, the Sith had destroyed the Jedi Temple, and killed many Jedi and disgraced the reputation of the Jedi in front of the Republic.

Malgus oversaw the orbital security of Coruscant as part of the Sith Occupation of Coruscant. However, he disobeyed these orders of Darth Angral and went back to the surface of the planet to take on the apprentice of Zallow, Aryn Leneer.

Leneer wanted revenge against the Sith Lord for killing her master. Their duel in the Jedi Temple was cut short as she was picked up by a spice runner named Zeerid Korr. Leneer decides that killing Malgus’ twi’lek lover Eleena would be a more painful revenge, however, she did not go through with the action. When she and Malgus fought again, he defeated her but let her leave as he knew that she had spared his lover.

A peace treaty was signed to end the Occupation of Coruscant and started the Cold War. Malgus killed his lover as it only made him weak, but her death only increased his anger and hatred. It was at this point, that Malgus decided to take over the Empire himself.

Malgus ordered many operations during the Cold War, such as the claiming the Foundry and defeating its master, Revan.

After the Sith Emperor, Darth Vitiate, was supposedly killed, Darth Arho invaded the planet Illum in retaliation. Malgus ended up helping the Republic defeat the Sith to see his rival destroyed. He then served as a military consultant for the Imperials and saw them try and teal Adegan crystals to create a stealth armada. Once the crystals were collected, Malgus delivered a speech declaring himself as the new Emperor that would not include the Dark Council. A strike team was put together to take out Malgus onboard his hidden space station.

The strike team was able to corner the Sith Lord in his throne room. Malgus activated the self-destruct sequence to destroy the fleets attacking the station. Although Malgus was a skilled fighter, he did weaken and was defeated by the strike team. However, that was not the end of the Sith Lord.

Malgus was successful in escaping the station before it was detonated. Malgus laid low for a while as time went on. Darth Marr ended up taking over the leadership from the fractured Sith Empire. It was believed universally that Darth Malgus was dead and defeated.

When the Eternal Empire invaded the known galaxy, Malgus was captured by the princes Arcann and Thexan. Malgus was frozen in carbonite and was given to the Immortal Emperor Valkorian, who really was the Sith Emperor Vitiate.

Malgus would be remembered as the Sith Lord, Darth Bane would right about him in the book, the Rule of Two. Darth Sidious would obtain excerpts from some of Malgus’ journals and put them in the Book of the Sith. Darth Vader would even study Malgus’ journals and noted his similarities to the Sith Lord. Along with Vitiate, Malgus is remembered for his strength and influence.
