In somewhat of a surprising announcement this morning, StarWars.Com has announced that Dark Horse comics will be returning to that Galaxy Far, Far Away…albeit to focus on Disney’s new canon.
Even with that in mind, one cannot help but speculate on what this means for the future of the Star Wars franchise. Does this signal a move away from Marvel? Does it mean that changes are happening which may eventually include a return of the Original Expanded Universe? Or does this mean the opposite?

I wouldn't read too much into this. Unfortunately I think it may have made business sense for Dark Horse to produce their own back catalog so Marvel can focus on it's own. Their contract with IDW may have been up for renewal and they decided to through Dark Horse a bone here. Great for Dark Horse and I'm happy for them since its well deserved. Hopefully if there is some good to come out of this its we have more publishers now fighting in our corner.
This shows promise, yet it will take even more Disney Trash Trilogy material to be released (which is not welcome at all), in order for the EU to be continued. Dark Horse will have to produce quite a lot of trash, before some real, decent Star Wars is once again in our hands. Another thing that will suck is that the creative teams might not return to continue, for example, Legacy Volume 2.
I think Lucasfilm would rather go bankrupt than license new Legends books and comics. I don't think we'll have a new novel by 2032, never mind the coming year.
