The top Dark Jedi of the Star Wars expanded universe

April 4, 2019

Throughout Galactic History, the prime users of the force were the Jedi and Sith Orders.  However, there was another group of Force users, ones that shunned the light side, but never fully committed to the dark side. Theses individuals were known as Dark Jedi.

In this piece, I want to share with you my picks for my Top Dark Jedi in the Star Wars universe.  This is all opinion based so I if your list differs from mine, then let’s discuss in the comments. I’d love to hear your viewpoints.  With that said, let’s begin.

Sedriss

The first entry on the list, Sedriss was the Executor for the reborn clone of Palpatine, his reward for remaining faithful to Palpatine after the Battle of Endor. Sedriss was devoted to his master, and would instantaneously drop to his knee upon sight of the Emperor. Palpatine was not always pleased with Sedriss' performance as Executor, but Sedriss was able to save himself by promising the Emperor results. Even when out of the Emperor's presence, Sedriss displayed a great amount of fealty to Palpatine, vowing to avenge himself on those responsible for the Emperor's numerous deaths. Sedriss also spoke highly of Palpatine's ability to grant considerable power to others. Sedriss would not hesitate to strike down any opponent in battle and was faithful in the dark side of the Force.  Sadly, he had very few appearances and did not have much added to his character.

Xanatos

The first padawan of the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, Xanatos, despite his master’s best efforts, established dark-side emotions and on a mission to Telos the young padawan learner joined forces with his corrupted father. When Qui Gon was forced to kill his father, who was the governor of Telos, Xanatos swore revenge against his master and disappeared. He would eventually come across his old master and his new apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi.  His plot to sabotage the Jedi Temple was thwarted and threw himself into an acid pool on Telos rather than surrendering to Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. As he died, he declared himself as Qui-Gon Jinn’s greatest failure.

Volfe Karrko

A force magician, Volfe Karkko would steal the essence of beings in order to feed himself due to his species instincts.  The beings would be left in a disfigured, and beast like state from that point forward. His strength in the Force was only matched by the Jedi Council.  Rather than eliminating Karkko, the Council placed him in stasis on the prison world of Kiffex. For a millennium he remained incarcerated, left in full mental consciousness by the Council so that he might contemplate the error of his ways.  Karkko was eventually freed by Aayla Secura. Secura was corrupted by Karkko and resumed his attempt to feed on beings. However, he was defeated by the Jedi Knight, Quinlan Voss. Karkko’s skill in Sith Sorcery and his natural strength in the Force made him a strong opponent, though, mainly in the Force as his dueling skills were quite subpar.

Asajj Ventress

The servant to Count Dooku and assassin during the Clone Wars, Ventress was a prime figure during the galaxy wide conflict.  She was able to boast over two dozen Jedi kills to her name. Ventress would encounter and duel Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker on multiple occasions.  She was even skilled enough to duel several Jedi Council members as well such as Plo Koon and Mace Windu.

Yun

Yun was the youngest and newest member to the Dark Jedi Jerec’s Dark Jedi. He primariy studied under Sariss, the Prophetess of the Church of the Dark Side.  In the city of Barons Hed, Yun dueled the Jedi-in-training Kyle Katarn. Katarn defeated Yun but spared his life. They later met again near the Valley on the planet Ruusan. Katarn had been rendered unconscious after his ship crashed.  Sariss tried to kill the defenseless Jedi with her lightsaber. Yun remembering Katarn spared his life, blocked Sariss’s blow. Deflected by the blow, Sariss’s lightsaber cut through Yun, mortally wounding him.

Sariss was shocked at the dark Jedi’s action.  She asked him why he would defend Katarn. Yun believed that as a Jedi, Katarn deserved a battle and died.  It is strongly believed that Yun died just as he turned to the light side of the Force. Yun would inadvertently aid Katarn after his death as Katarn would wield Yun’s lightsaber as his was destroyed by Boc the Crude.

Sora Bulq

One of the lead lightsaber instructor’s of the Jedi Order, and one of Count Dooku’s personal body guards, Sora Bulq was considered to be one of the best lightsaber duelists of his era. He was most known for his aid in creating Vaapad with Mace Windu and creating a schism within the Jedi Order. Bulq was a major threat during the Clone Wars until he was slain by Quinlan Vos near the wars end.

By delving fully in the dark side, it caused him to turn into a sadistic animal. Though Bulq was not a long-lasting threat, his notes would last longer as his notes in a holocron were eventually found and read by Luke Skywalker and were in the possession of his new Jedi order.

Desann

Leader of the Empire Reborn Movement and the Shadowtroopers, Desann was a former padawan of Luke Skywalker who believed that the Order was too weak to make a difference in the galaxy.  Desann followed Kyle Katarn to the Valley of the Jedi and created the Reborn. A group of individuals who fed off the valley’s power.

Desann killed many Jedi who stood in his way and planned an attack on Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy. He was finally stopped by Katarn after a vicious lightsaber duel in the bowels of the Academy. Deceptive, strong, and cunning Desann had all the qualities of a true warlord and his commanding presence demanded attention.

Joruus C’Baoth

An insane clone of the Jedi Master Jorus C’Baoth, Joruus assisted Grand Admiral Thrawn in waging war against the New Republic.  Thrawn desired to use the Dark Jedi’s battle meditation ability to turn the tide of the Empire’s battles for control. He believed that the Jedi were superior over all beings in the galaxy and he tried to convey this knowledge to Leia Organ Solo and Luke Skywalker when he tried to convert them to the dark side. He was eventually defeated and killed by Mara Jade on Wayland.

Completely insane, C’Baoth believed he was the superior being.  Believing that his status as a Jedi gave him the right to rule over others, even going as far as warping the minds of others to do his bidding, going as far as making a clone of Luke Skywalker himself. Like many other Dark Jedi, he cared only of furthering his own goals.

Jerec

Taking the top spot on my list, is the former Jedi and the inquisitor of the Empire, Jerec.  Leader of the Seven Dark Jedi, Jerec’s goal is locating the Valley of the Jedi and utilizing its power for his own personal use, ultimately, wanting to become the new Emperor. Murdering the Jedi Qu-Rahn, Jerec was finally killed when his connection the valley was severed by the self-trained Jedi learner Kyle Katarn. By using his teachings from the Jedi and from the dark side, Jerec was a very unpredictable being.

Jerec was very cunning and his power even without the valley of the Jedi, he easily outclasses the entries on this list and even had the potential to go up against several Sith Lords.  Jerec was a skilled Force user and was a true Dark Jedi master.
