Collecting the Galaxy: Body Rigs

Now here’s a new one for me. Until I started doing this research I never knew Kenner made these. Body Rig’s were common in the 80’s as a last ditch effort to make something on the cheap for a toy line on the decline. Lot’s of toy lines did it back then, including two of my favorites, M.A.S.K. and Super Powers.

I’ve also never seen this packaging before so all this is as new to me as it may be to you. Anyway, let’s look at some of these shall we?

The first one is the Imperial Sniper. Cool name but it looks like the Empire’s answer to the Ewoks hang-gliders. Why’s it called a sniper anyway? Those things don’t look quiet and you should be able to see them coming a mile awa….oh wait….it’s a toy. Moving on….

The next one is the Security Scout. The only thing that looks dumber than the Imperial Sniper. It’s camouflage so that’s good. Because you wouldn’t want to be caught dead flying around in anything as ridiculous as that!

Finally is the Sand Skimmer. Pretty neat design and it looks like it could fit in with Jabba’s Sail Barge entourage.

But wait! Did you know this exact vehicle was also featured in an episode of the Droids cartoon? Making it one of the few Kenner EU toys ever to make on TV! I don’t know why they chose that one, maybe even the creators of Droids could see how ridiculous the other two looked.

Love them or hate them, it’s a piece of Kenner Toy history, that made Star Wars a little more interesting.
