  • Twin Suns Foundation 2024 Update!

Greetings everyone! It has been a bit since I have taken the time to write an update on Twin Suns Foundation, so I figured with the new year now would be the right time! To begin with, let us take a look at 2023.  Twin Suns Foundation has gotten back into its stride.  We donated books to multiple locations this year including our first international donations occurring in October and November in Toronto Canada at two children’s hospitals! The books were quite well received there! With those donations, we surpassed 1,800 books donated since the Foundation started in 2016! Also in 2023, Twin Suns Foundation made an appearance at LegendsCon, hosting a table on the show floor and holding two panels explaining our activities to interested attendees. The convention was an amazing experience and we are all but certain we will be attending any future LegendsCons. During this convention, we were able to collect even more books than we did at our first convention appearance at Star Wars Celebration. An impressive feat when you consider the convention went for half as many days and for shorter time periods both days! You Star Wars Expanded Universe fans certainly are not shy about sharing your love and we could not be any more pleased! However, 2024 will be a different year entirely for Twin Suns Foundation.  As you may already be aware, Twin Suns Foundation is setting its biggest book fundraising goal ever as we look to commemorate the ten year anniversary of Death Star Day, the day Disney and Lucasfilm announced their discontinuation of the Expanded Universe.  Twin Suns will be doing so by going above and beyond with the help of fans all across the globe. We are planning ten donation events throughout the year to be held at many of our prior donation locations as well as several new ones! For reference, Twin Suns typically aims to complete at least two donation events each year. By aiming even higher than usual in 2024, we aim to continue to bring awareness to the cause of the Expanded Universe Movement while also spreading even more love for the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Precise details on all of these locations is to be determined, but we know we will be bringing books back to Toronto, Phoenix, LA, and likely a location or two in the states of Florida and Texas. Be sure to check out our social media and website for more information on this fundraiser as it may very well be live by the time you are reading this and, of course, feel free to donate and share as you are able! All donations made on our website are considered tax deductible in the United States as Twin Suns Foundation is a 501 c(3) tax exempt entity! Also happening through 2024, Twin Suns will be shouting out fellow fans and their efforts to commemorate the ten year anniversary of Death Star Day. As a part of a much larger community, we will do all we can to ensure the fandom at large does not forget that us Expanded Universe fans are still out here, waiting for the Star Wars we know and love to have an official continuation! And with that, you should have a good idea as to what Twin Suns has in the works for 2024! We look forward to taking this journey with you all! Thank you for taking the time to read this update and May the Force Be With You!

  • Cade Skywalker and Ania SoloA Comparison of Heritage and Destiny

In this short essay, I will be comparing the two main protagonists of the Legacy comics, Cade Skywalker and Ania Solo, specifically their respective views of their heritage and their destiny and how they contrast each other. Starting out with Cade Skywalker, throughout the majority of the Legacy comics, Cade grapples with the destiny the force has created for him. He doesn't care whatsoever for his family lineage and the responsibility he has, as he is traumatized mainly by what happened to his father when he was only a teenager. Cade is content to let his abilities fade and watch his own back while the galaxy falls into chaos. Cade continually rejects his ability to make a difference despite the constant urging from the spirits of his ancestors and his own father. In comparison, Ania Solo is the complete opposite. Ania starts out as a lowly junkyard owner on a backwater world. She yearns for adventure and has always had a kind heart and has always looked out for her friends. She is steadfast in the face of injustice. Unlike her distant cousin Cade, she isn’t force sensitive. Ania is aware of her famous lineage but while she doesn’t usually talk about it, she wants to live up to them, she wants to be like them and wants that destiny that Cade dismisses. In the end, after many trials and tribulations, Cade accepts that with the abilities he has and what he represents as a Skywalker, he must stand up against the dark side and save the galaxy. He must accept his destiny and his role and think about the bigger picture instead of only thinking about himself. He proudly declares a Jedi as he strikes down Darth Krayt once and for all. For Ania, she is eventually drawn into a galaxy spanning adventure alongside her ally’s and helps defeat Darth Wredd and the Sith. Ania earns her place as a hero like her famous ancestors and lives up to that famous Solo name. She fires the final shot that ends Darth Wredd’s evil. Afterwards, Ania spends her time adventuring with companions. This is a really interesting comparison I thought of and I wanted to share it. It’s really interesting how these two characters see themselves and how they view their heritage. It is also so cool to see them grow and go on fantastic character arcs. Unfortunately due to the Disney buyout, we never got to see Cade and Ania meet and have adventures together. Hopefully one day, if the EU is continued, we’ll see these amazing characters again. Specifically for me, I would love to see Ania’s story continued as it was so abruptly halted, she is in my top 5 Star Wars characters and it would be such a treat to see her again and explore that era of Star Wars again.

Anzat Major System (R-7) ·        Sun/Star: unnamed ·        Orbits: o   Anzat Homeworld of the vampiric near-human Anzati species, Anzat was an eerie world of misty valleys and ominous mountain ranges. Discovered by Republic scouts as early as 20,000 BBY during the Great Manifest Period, the world was avoided as the Anzati fed off the life-forces of other sentient beings. As a result, Anzat remained neutral throughout most of galactic history, erecting spaceports and towering metropolises that attracted criminal activity. During the Jedi Civil War, the planet aligned with Darth Revan’s Sith Empire, but returned to neutrality following the collapse of the empire at the end of the subsequent conflicts. Anzat remained neutral through the New Sith War, joining the CIS during the Clone Wars. Following the Clone Wars, the planet came under Imperial rule until its collapse at the end of the Galactic Civil War. Not joining the New Republic, or its reorganization into the Galactic Alliance, the planet was briefly occupied by Yuuzhan Vong forces during their invasion of the galaxy. Abhean System (R-7) ·        Sun/Star: unnamed ·        Orbits: o   Abhean A major Republic industrial world by the time of the Tionese War circa 24,000 BBY, Abhean was on the perimeter of Republic space for millennia, making it a prime target for conquest during galactic conflicts. Abhean was momentarily occupied by Tionese forces, as well as Alsakan forces during the Second Alsakan Conflict of 15,000 BBY. During this conflict, Abhean became a major hub for the Republic Navy. During the Old Sith Wars era, Abhean was a major battlefield, seeing attacks by the Mandalorians during the Great Sith War of 3,996 BBY and the subsequent Mandalorian Wars that started in 3,976 BBY. Following that war, Abhean came under control of Darth Revan’s Sith Empire during the Jedi Civil War but returned to Republic control upon the death of Darth Malak. Millennia later, come the Clone Wars, Abhean came under the jurisdiction of the Confederation of Independent Systems. Despite numerous attempts, the Republic Navy was unable to wrestle the system from Separatist control until after the war and the government had been reconstituted into the Galactic Empire. During the Galactic Civil War, Abhean was a major hub for the Imperial Navy, until 13 ABY when the planet joined the New Republic. During the Yuuzhan Vong War, Abhean was momentarily conquered by the extra-galactic invaders in 26 ABY, before being liberated by the newly christened Galactic Alliance. It is unclear if Abhean remained part of the Alliance or shifted hands to the Corellian Confederation, Fel Empire, or Darth Krayt’s Sith Empire during subsequent galactic conflicts. Besh Gorgon System (R-7) ·        Sun/Star: Besh Gorgon ·        Orbits: none Despite being an empty system void of any natural orbits, the system did house the massive space station known as The Wheel. Constructed around 84 BBY, the space station acted as an independently-aligned casino and entertainment facility. Decades later, during the Clone Wars, The Wheel came under the jurisdiction of the Separatists, providing the Republic and Jedi with infiltration and espionage opportunities. During the Galactic Civil War, the station retained most of its autonomy, enjoying a “sphere of immunity” from Imperial oversight, so long as they paid their taxes to the Empire. Following the collapse of the Empire, the station regained full independence until the Yuuzhan Vong War, when it was briefly conquered by the invading aliens. The Wheel was still independent by 137 ABY, acting as neutral territory for galactic governments to broker agreements. However, by the following year, leadership of the space station revoked this practice, but secretly allowed Alliance Remnant forces access to their station as a haven, due to nefarious behavior on behalf of the Fel Empire and Darth Krayt’s One Sith Empire. Centares System (R-7) ·        Sun/Star: Centares ·        Orbits: o   Filo §  one unnamed moon/satellite o   Ussuis §  two unnamed moons/satellites o   Liotch (asteroid field) o   Centares o   Qasqi §  11 unnamed moons/satellites o   Nizon §  two unnamed moons/satellites o   Ithoon §  three unnamed moons/satellites o   Far Qasgi §  eight unnamed moons/satellites Most of the planets in the system were uninhabitable, with Ussuis and Ithoon being a toxic ocean and barren wasteland, respectively; while Filo, Qasqi, and Far Qasqi were gas giants with uninhabitable moons. Only Centares and Nizon were inhabited worlds. Nizon was the homeworld of the bipedal Nazren species who were conquered by Imperial forces and enslaved by Trandoshan slavers during the early years of the Galactic Civil War, until they were liberated by local anti-Imperial resistance groups with connections to the Rebel Alliance. Centares was a lush world of fertile planes and mountain ranges, with sprawling urban centers. Originally believed to be a world on the perimeter of Xim’s empire centuries before the creation of the Galactic Republic, Centares became a major Republic world during the Old Sith Wars era, especially the during the Cold War between the Republic and Sith Empire that kicked off in 3,653 BBY. During the Clone Wars, Centares joined the CIS, remaining a Separatist world until the end of the war. With the rise of the Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War, the planet was occupied by Imperial forces and strip mined of its natural resources, reducing the planet’s majestic prairies and towering mountain ranges into a polluted, industrial wasteland. By 5 ABY, the fledging New Republic was able to wrestle the system away from the warring Imperial warlords in the region, holding Centares until the Yuuzhan Vong War when the aliens temporarily occupied the planet in 26 ABY. The planet eventually returned to the Galactic Alliance, but remained a drab, industrial world. Entiia System (R-7) ·        Sun/Star: unnamed ·        Orbits: o   Oolan Oolan was a minor oceanic world that came under Imperial control during the Galactic Civil War. The planet was populated by barge cities, its largest the city known as Oolan. Ganzik System (R-7) ·        Sun/Star: unnamed ·        Orbits: o   Ganzik Ganzik was a minor world that housed a sizable shipyard facility. During the Galactic Civil War, the planet was controlled by an independently-aligned corporation that produced small and medium spacecrafts. Jendiria System (R-7) ·        Sun/Star: Jendiria ·        Orbits: none Jendiria was an empty system that saw little galactic traffic. New Holstice System (R-7) ·        Sun/Star: unnamed ·        Orbits: o   New Holstice New Holstice was a minor Republic world dating back to at least 4,000 BBY. The planet housed a Jedi monument that memorialized all the Jedi that had fallen in battle since the foundation of the Republic, as well as an elaborate hospital facility. The planet was unsuccessfully assaulted by Mandalorian forces prior to the Clone Wars. Following the Clone Wars, New Holstice remained neutral in galactic affairs.

  • Character Highlight: Jaina Solo

By Maxine Morrell The Thrawn trilogy introduced us to the first of the next generation of heroes, the Solo twins, Jaina and Jacen. Today we will be highlighting the legendary, Jaina Solo Fel. The Sword of the Jedi. Jaina Solo was born in 9 ABY on Coruscant during the emergence of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Even before she was born, she and her twin brother Jacen were already being targeted by the evil forces of the dark side, specifically the mad dark jedi, Joruus C’baoth. Luckily the attempts at kidnapping the Solo kids were thwarted by their parents and uncle. Over the years of her childhood, Jaina had been kidnapped and threatened with death numerous times, needless to say, hers was not a normal childhood and all through her life, Jaina’s life would be anything but normal. While Jaina looked a lot like her mother, she mostly took after her roguish father, sharing his mechanical aptitude and hot headed nature. She was also an excellent pilot just like her father and uncle. All through her childhood, Jaina loved to take apart mechanics and tinker with them, even her room at her uncle’s Jedi academy was cluttered with bits and pieces of various parts and junk. She would often build containers for her brother Jacen’s menagerie of creatures he had found in Yavin’s jungles. At the age of 13, Jaina and her twin brother started their Jedi training with their uncle at his Jedi Praxeum on Yavin 4. In her studies, she became close friends with the princess of Hapes, Tenel Ka, Chewbacca’s nephew, Lowbacca and Raynar Thul. Jaina would form lifelong bonds with these friends and would embark on many adventures with them through her teen years at the Jedi Academy. At such a young age, Jaina had a hand in the defeat of the Second Imperium and the Diversity Alliance which these stories are detailed in the Young Jedi Knights series. After Jaina graduates the Jedi academy’s basic training, she is taken on as a padawan to her aunt, Mara Jade Skywalker. Shortly thereafter Jaina would be drawn into the bloodiest war the galaxy had ever known. Jaina would be a key player in the Yuuzhan Vong war, she would always be on the front lines along with the rest of her family. Due to her expert piloting skills, Jaina would be put onto the legendary Rogue Squadron, Jaina would fly with the Rogue’s at many battles during the Vong war. Specifically during the battle of Ithor, she would meet the ace pilot, Jagged Fel whom she would share a budding romance with during the war. During the war, Jaina would experience unknowable loss, losing countless wingmates, Chewbacca and her little brother Anakin. After the final defeat of the Yuuzhan Vong at Coruscant, Jaina would be involved in the Dark Nest crisis in which Jaina would fight on the side of the Killiks as she was a Joiner in their nest for a while. It was during the Dark Nest crisis where she would see Jagged Fel again and ultimately cause him to be exiled from his family in Chiss space. It was also during this crisis that Jaina would notice a drastic change in her twin brother after he returned from his five year sojourn. Two years later, Jaina would have to bear witness to her twin brother slowly fall into the dark side and become Darth Caedus, in what would become the second galactic civil war. Jaina would experience the sting of loss once more when Jacen murdered their aunt, Mara Jade, all the while experiencing the heart-rending corruption of her brother and best friend. Also during this time, Jaina would reconnect with Jagged Fel and the two would start falling for each other once more, much to the dismay of her childhood friend, Zekk. To end her brother’s tyranny, Jaina was given the heartbreaking task of having to hunt down and kill Jacen. To prepare for her inevitable fight with her brother, she sought out famous bounty hunter and one of her fathers rival, Boba Fett. for weeks, Jaina trained in the fighting ways of the Mandalorians and eventually became skilled enough to defeat even the best of Fett’s mandos. At the battle of Uroro station, Jaina boarded her brother’s flagship and in a brutal and vicious duel, she defeated her fallen brother, forever scarring her heart. Two years later, Jaina would be involved in the Lost tribe of the Sith crisis and the awakening of the ancient force entity, Abeloth. During this time, Jaina would help her uncle Luke and cousin Ben in fighting the emergent Sith, quickly gaining herself a feared reputation among the Sith and Vestara Khai. Jaina would be present during the battle of Coruscant against the Sith and Abeloth, fighting primarily inside the Jedi temple, absolutely trampling lost tribe members and showcasing her amazing skill and power in the force. It was also during this crisis that Jaina would be granted the rank of master and appointed to the Jedi council. After the defeat of Abeloth and the Lost tribe, Jaina would marry Jagged Fel in a beautiful wedding surrounded by friends and family. Finally some happiness for Jaina after a life of loss, pain and war. Unfortunately, Jaina’s story in the EU ends there due to the EU being discontinued by Disney. Jaina’s story was planned to be continued in the canceled Sword of the Jedi trilogy that was to be written by Christie Golden. • In Defense of Knight Errant

By Maxine Morrell Knight Errant, not exactly the story you think of when you think about the Expanded Universe. Most of the time, it goes under the radar, overshadowed by its chronological successor, the Darth Bane trilogy. What if I told you that Knight Errant was a great book, worthy of praise and deserving of a place of respect among EU fans? Well in this article, I will show you why. We’re gonna start with the Knight Errant novel, this book picks up right after the first 5 issue arc of the Knight Errant comics and sees Jedi Knight Kerra Holt deep in Sith occupied space embarking on an assassination attempt of Sith Lord Daiman. Kerra’s journey takes her across vast regions of Sith space working to help a displaced group of youngsters caught in the midst of the warring Sith brothers, Odion and Daiman as well as other Sith lords. This concept is so fascinating, a lone Jedi knight, in Sith space going from planet to planet to help people under Stih rule. It is a very underground railroad type theme and it is executed superbly by John Jackson Miller. I would also like to highlight the vast array of Sith in this book, from the ever eccentric and insufferable Lord Daiman, his psychotic brother, Odion and even a Quermian Sith Lord, there is no shortage of interesting villains. One of the most interesting concepts in this book was the Sith twins, these children were such a highlight of the book and really had an intriguing story. The twins ruled over a population through mind manipulation, using the telepathic abilities of the Celegian species, the species of Jedi Master Ooroo, from the Tales of the Jedi comics, which are referenced many times through the book which is always fun to see. Knight Errant also introduced the concept of this warring Sith family, all vying for favor with their grandmother. It is a very Game of Thrones type concept and it was something I wish we could have explored further, I’m confident we would have had Disney not discontinued the EU. If you think your family gatherings are bad, try imagining this Sith family gathering where your cousins are plotting to kill you and take your stuff. When reading this book, this was the last thing I expected, the twists in Knight Errant were done so well and had me on the edge of my seat reading. I would like to touch on the topic of Kerra Holt herself. Kerra gets a lot of flak in the fandom unfortunately but I am here to tell you that she is incredibly underrated. Kerra Holt starts out as this arrogant, hot headed Jedi who thinks she can save everyone. Over the course of the various Knight Errant media, she learns to be as her master was, she learns to be cunning and calculating while also retaining her sharp wit and ferocious fighting abilities. She also learns that she can’t save everyone on her own, for a good portion of the story, she believes that she is the only one capable of doing her job but reluctantly she realizes that she isn’t the only force for good and that it is okay to seek help and work cooperatively. Another thing about Kerra is that she is always going to go the extra mile to make sure a mission is completed, as we see in the Influx short story, she goes out of her way to get a vital part for the ship they need to access Daiman’s territories. While it was not officially sanctioned, she still was the reason the mission was able to proceed when all hope seemed lost. Kerra is the ideal Jedi for an era of war, she is a fierce combatant and willing to do what is necessary to complete a task. Kerra also is pretty interesting regarding the color of her lightsaber, she is questioned on the green blade from a fellow Jedi, who asks if she seeks to become a consular, to which she states, it was just the first crystal she grabbed. At her core, Kerra is a pragmatist, she is realistic in her goals and she isn’t the greatest Jedi, she takes a lot of beatings instead of being perfect in every regard. Kerra Holt is far from the greatest Star Wars character but she is also far from the worst and she is one that I personally took a liking to. The Knight Errant comics are a really fun addition to the story and they compliment the novel well. In the comics we get to see the exhilarating battles of the New Sith Wars and we can truly see the heights of insanity of Daiman and Odion. I can see why people may not take to them and I believe that is partially due to them being canceled, if the EU had continued, we could have gotten more of the comics as where we left off was most definitely an open end. Either way, Knight Errant can be considered an acquired taste for some but I hope that this article made some of you want to reread it with a little more of an open mind and just give it one more chance or maybe I even changed your mind on Knight Errant, if not, that’s okay too. At the end of the day, we are all EU fans and we all have the books and comics we love and dislike but one thing that connects us all is a shared love of the Expanded Universe. Long Live the Expanded Universe

  • An INterview with a Jedi Master

By Maxine Morrell Last week, I had the exciting opportunity to sit down with the galaxy’s foremost Jedi Master and protector, the legendary Luke Skywalker. In the wake of the biggest war the galaxy has ever known, Luke goes into detail on some of the misconceptions of the Jedi order and their goals, as well as giving us insight on what a Jedi should be and how we all can make a difference in the galaxy, regardless if we are Jedi or not. Hello Master Luke, thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to meet with me. I know with the war having just ended, you are helping with reconstruction. I am glad to be here! Any chance I get to shed more light on our order, the better. Reconstruction is going well, the Chief of State's office and the Jedi council are working as a well oiled machine to bring everything back to normal. So jumping right in, at one point during the war, there was a lot of anti-Jedi sentiment spreading, how did you combat that and what is truly the role of a Jedi? That was an extremely dark time in our history and during it, we tried our best to show the galaxy that we were not some self righteous group of space wizards wielding laser swords. We were doing our best to protect however many lives we could and humanize ourselves to the general public. You see, the Jedi are just like normal people, we all have personal lives and loved ones. To answer the last part of your question, the role of a Jedi is to be a guardian of peace and justice, to protect life and cherish it. We are also dedicated to the protection and growth of the Galactic Alliance, while we may not be under their jurisdiction as previous Jedi were, we will happily support them. What are your goals for the Jedi and the galaxy long term? Well, one goal I would like to strive towards is raising my son, Ben Skywalker, who was born during the war. That is my main goal at the moment, the war kept us all so distracted, my son was hidden away with the other Jedi younglings while my wife and I were on the front lines, so now that we are at peace, I want to spend as much time with my family as possible. As for the Jedi, my goal would essentially be to have the order grow to the point where they don’t need me anymore, where the Jedi’s light is not reliant on myself and we are seeing the beginnings of that with my niece and nephew and now my son. My goal for the galaxy though would just be to be at peace so that my son and everyone else’s kids can grow up and know only peace. So we know of the Jedi’s ability to do good but how can us common folk who can’t access the powers of a Jedi make a difference? Let me start by saying that the force resides in all living things, some just have the ability to harness it but that isn’t what makes us Jedi. It is the choices we make and what we do that defines us and that is how everyone can make a difference. We each have the choice to be selfless or selfish, we each can choose if we want to use our abilities to help others and make the galaxy a better place even in a tiny way. Always pursue the path of peace and knowledge and do what you can to help everyone, your choices do make a difference and little by little, you will see your reality become brighter. How have your past mentors helped shape you into the person you are today? While I am eternally grateful to my teachers for giving me the fundamentals, I mainly had to figure it out on my own. I was left to bring the Jedi back after my mentors had passed. Occasionally I do tend to reach out for their help when I feel lost or I try to think how they would handle different situations when I feel stuck. Their wisdom still guides me to this day and their teachings are passed onto my own students, through this passing of knowledge, my mentors are never truly gone. What would you say is the hardest part of being a Jedi? The laundry (he laughed). The amount of robes we have to clean is absurd! In all seriousness, I would say the hardest part is having to make the choice that no one else can and dealing with the results of those difficult choices. Those choices sometimes are at great cost to our own well being but it is ultimately necessary to keep the peace. To wrap up this interview, what words of wisdom would you leave us with today? Focus on the good, if you spend too much time focusing on the negatives of things, that is only what you will ever see. Also, remember that there is always more to learn, take the opportunity to learn from each encounter you have and each person you meet. Well folks there you have it! Luke was such a delight to speak with and just someone who makes everyone in the room feel at peace but he also carries such an authority. He truly is one of a kind. I hope you all enjoyed this exclusive interview, tune in next week on the Pierre Needmo News Hour when we go to the galactic senate to interview the Chief of State, Cal Omas! EDITOR'S NOTE: This story was submitted by Maxine last month but some doofus (me) only saved it as a draft instead of publishings it earlier. Sorry Maxie!

  • Hive of Scum and Villainy: Lawyers in the EU (Part III)

By Marcel Ryan Welcome back to our galactic tour of the legal profession in that Galaxy Far, Far Away! In my last two articles, we focused on two of the biggest legal trials in the Expanded Universe. We saw a fair bit of the “scum” mentioned above, but one thing we haven’t seen much of yet is the “villainy”. Sure, we talked about some antagonistic prosecutors and judges, but we never really got the sense that they were true villains. At best, they were trying to do their jobs. At worst, they were satisfying every lawyer’s deep-seated need to always be right in every circumstance. The portrait of a “lawyer as villain” is an easy one to imagine. Case in point, let’s take a brief look at Star Wars author Paul S. Kemp’s biography, as featured in the back of his books: “When he’s not writing, he practices corporate law in Michigan, which has inspired him to write some really believable villains.” The reality is that not many people like lawyers. It’s easy to cast them as the villains. Much like dentists, they are a necessary evil (although, even that is debatable). Unless you’re a big corporation, it’s likely the case that the average person only ever really needs a lawyer when (1) they’re buying a property; (2) they’re drafting a will; and/or (3) something goes wrong. And nobody ever really likes to think about (2) and (3). It’s no wonder William Shakespeare wrote “Let’s kill all the lawyers” in Henry VI. Similarly, we now begin to understand why Dungeons & Dragons casts “lawful evil” devils in the role of contracts lawyers. But what makes a lawyer bad? In today’s article, we will be focusing on one specific lawyer in the EU, the infamous Lord Lestra Oxic. Several of you may not have heard of Lestra Oxic. He’s the primary antagonist in James Luceno’s Millennium Falcon, which was published on October 21, 2008. Millennium Falcon is somewhat unique in that it is a standalone novel and covers 103 years of galactic history from 60 BBY to 43 ABY. Present day for this novel is 43 ABY, which places it between Legacy of the Force and Fate of the Jedi in the timeline. Some knowledge of the events in Legacy of the Force may be needed, but not much. It can be read and enjoyed on its own merits. As a continuity guru, James Luceno is one of the few authors qualified to write a book like this. And, in my opinion, he did an amazing job. The history of one of the most popular starships of all time (the eponymous Millennium Falcon) is traced through its beginnings all the way to present, a grand century-long saga wherein the ship was constantly repaired, patched up and changed hands many times. Luceno masterfully weaved all of the existing lore on the Falcon into his narrative, referencing sources from across the EU timeline. Remarkably, however, I’ve noticed that more casual readers never really feel lost or out of the loop while reading this book. That’s the magic of James Luceno. So where does a lawyer figure into all of this? Well, as it turns out, Lestra Oxic was an obsessive and dedicated collector of Republicana, art and antiques from the Old Republic era. As Star Wars fans, we can probably sympathize somewhat with his need to collect it all. The “holy grail” collector’s item for Oxic is the Insignia of Unity. It was an insignia forged in aurodium, orichalum, and Coruscanthium that hung from the Galactic Senate Chancellor’s podium. We see it displayed prominently as early as Episode I: The Phantom Menace in front of Chancellor Valorum. When the Republic fell in 19 BBY, the Insignia was spirited away by members of the Republic Group, a secret group of elites dedicated to undermining Palpatine’s rule. Why was this Insignia so important? Think about the symbolism behind it. It represented something completely antithetical to Palpatine’s Galactic Empire. As a result, it was safely hidden until such a time that the Republic’s honor could be restored. Unfortunately, however, it never resurfaced after Palpatine’s rule ended. Oxic learned from a former client and longtime friend, Senator Des’sein, that a ship called the Stellar Envoy held the key to finding the Insignia of Unity. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the title of the novel, the Stellar Envoy would later be renamed to the Millennium Falcon. This is where the fun begins. A bit of background on Lestra Oxic is needed before we delve further into the plot. Oxic was a human noble who made a name for himself as a high-profile defense lawyer on Coruscant. Noted for his skills with words and data, he built a large and prestigious firm, which represented political power brokers (e.g. Senators) and celebrities. In fact, Oxic wielded so much influence that he would eagerly defend Palpatine’s political enemies in the aftermath of the Clone Wars without ever suffering a reprisal. It’s hard to believe that the evil Galactic Empire did not silence him, although I suppose it suited Palpatine’s purposes to foster the illusion of due process, and Oxic would have (unwittingly) been part of that farce. Oxic survived the Empire’s tyrannical reign and continued to amass his wealth in the years that followed. As of 43 ABY, he had the three things every collector needs to find their “holy grail”: obsession, wealth and information. He had spent untold amounts of credits tracking the Stellar Envoy through the years. In 4 ABY, when the Empire began to fall apart, Oxic obtained secret Imperial Intelligence documents that traced the Envoy from the Battle of Coruscant (see: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith) to the smuggler’s moon, Nar Shaddaa. It was there that Oxic learned that the Envoy had been wrecked in a crash. Its captain at the time, a man named Tobb Jadak, had been grievously injured and reduced to a coma in said crash. Oxic dedicated a considerable amount of his vast fortune to pay for Jadak’s transfer to the prestigious Aurora Medical Facility. Why would he do such a thing? Not out of the goodness of his heart. He was determined to find any more information he could on the location of the Insignia. He even hired a private neurologist to help with Jadak’s rehabilitation at the facility. Now this might seem crazy to some, but if you had all the time and all the money in the world, you would really need to ask yourself what lengths you might go to in order to obtain that one thing that would complete your collection. Sometime after the Yuuzhan Vong War, Oxic hired Koi Quire, a Firrerreo (for you Crystal Star fans), who eventually became his most trusted aide. Oxic would also employ less savoury individuals to act as hired muscle, collect information, detain bail-jumpers and carry out sensitive tasks. He was a pragmatist, unbothered by the moral dilemmas that would plague lesser people. He was even able to hold onto some of his youth (despite advancing age) as a result of treatments from the Aurora Medical Facility. On the eve of a large trial in 43 ABY, Oxic learned from Quire that Jadak had finally (after decades) awakened from his coma. Before he could intercept the former captain, Tobb Jadak left the Facility and went on his own hunt for his former ship, the Stellar Envoy. At the same time, Oxic lost his big case when the star witness refused to testify as a result of meddling from a fellow Republicana collector and adversary named Rej Taunt – now there’s a name that is right on-the-nose! As all of this was unfolding, Han and Leia Organa Solo had launched their own investigation into the Falcon’s origins. Their efforts led them to the Aurora Medical Facility, where they discovered that a former captain of the Falcon had recently come out of a coma after decades. After learning of this visit from the neurologist he hired, Oxic strongly suspected that the Stellar Envoy was the same ship as the Millennium Falcon. Of course, he knew about Han and Leia – not only did he know Leia’s adopted father, Bail Organa, but it’s hard not to know about two of the most famous people in the galaxy after their many exploits over the previous 43 years. Always the pragmatist, never the moralist, Oxic sent his thugs to steal the Falcon on a planet called Vaced. Unfortunately for him, the Falcon’s theft prevention systems kicked in and returned the ship back to the spaceport. At this point, Oxic intervened and secured a plea deal for his thugs: "Princess Leia, I'm certain you don't want to spend any more time on Vaced than is absolutely necessary. If my clients take my advice and enter a plea of not guilty, you and Captain Solo and your young ward will be required to remain here for the arraignment, and be forced to return for the pretrial and trial, assuming the case should get that far. Furthermore, you will be obliged to reside in a hotel—assuming for the moment Vaced even has one—for however long it will take for this…law officer to complete his poking around in the Falcon on an ostensible search for forensic evidence." "Nice to see you haven't lost your special touch, Lestra." ―Lestra Oxic and Leia Organa Solo Following these events, Oxic surreptitiously tracked the Falcon to its ultimate destination. With the help of former captain Tobb Jadak, Han and Leia had located the Insignia themselves in an ancient structure on Tandun III. Oxic again intervened and laid claim to the Insignia of Unity. He had invested countless credits and time into locating it and, therefore, felt entitled to its ownership. In an ironic twist of fate, when he scanned the Insignia, he discovered it was a counterfeit. Although they had been at odds with one another, the Solos and Oxic parted amicably, narrowly avoiding danger from groundquakes that leveled the ancient structure. Oxic even hired Jadak to assist him with the ongoing search for the real Insignia. After all, he had another lead now – the Naffiff Brothers construction company, which had been hired to repair and renovate the Galactic Senate Rotunda, decades earlier. In retrospect, Oxic is not a traditional villain. He is not portrayed as intentionally malicious, although his actions sometimes involve bad things happening to other people. We are given the sense that he will stop at very little to achieve his ends. We are left wondering what Oxic would have done if the Insignia was the real deal and if the Solos had tried to take it from him. Would he cross an uncrossable line? While we’d like to think he’s too classy for that, it’s difficult to predict how he might have reacted given all that he put into this wild Bantha chase. But, it appears all is well that ends well. Is Luceno trying to tell us that Oxic isn’t such a bad guy after all? And by extension, does that mean he’s telling us that lawyers are just like anybody else? Or are we unable to overlook Oxic’s obsessions, his morally dubious actions and pragmatic approach to getting what he wants? Whichever way you slice it, Oxic is undoubtedly someone you’d want on your side. Nobody wants a lawyer until they need one. Then they want the best one they can find – someone who will get the job done and not get bogged down by moral dilemmas. But is that the kind of lawyer that society (as a whole) wants to cultivate? The story of Oxic’s obsessive chase for the ultimate MacGuffin forces us to look back in on ourselves and re-examine the societal role played by lawyers, not just in the GFFA, but also in our own world. And so, while I continue to ponder these deeper questions, I implore you to go read (or re-read) Millennium Falcon by James Luceno! It’s one heck of an adventure. Remember, the devil is in the details and lawyers are obsessed with details.

  • A Comparison of Two Universes

The following was written by Maxine Morrell for her college essay that compared the Expanded Universe with the new DIsney canon. She was kind enough to let us post it here for everyone to enjoy. Thank you Maxine! [The Star Wars ExpandedUniverse (1978-2014) Vs The DisneyStar Wars Universe(current)] In 1977 when Star Wars took the world by storm, fans clamored for more, thus spawned what is now known as the Expanded Universe or EU for short. The EU started in 1978, a year after the release of Star Wars, with the novel “Splinter of the Mind’s Eye”by Alan Dean Foster. From then on, the EU grew exponentially, spanning 25,000 years of Star Wars history. The EU was more than just books too, it was comics, video games, trading cards, role playing games, animation and so much more. When the Star Wars original trilogy ended in 1983 with “Return of the Jedi”, the Star Wars universe had gone quiet, many who were fans at the time considered it a dark age until in 1991 the Star Wars universewas revitalized. 1991 brought the release of “Heir to the Empire” the first of three in a trilogyof novels. “Heir to the Empire" reached number one on the New York Times Bestseller list and the entire trilogy itself sold a combined total of 15 million copies. This trilogy of books picked up where the story left off, continuing the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and PrincessLeia, this trilogyalso introduced brand new characters to the Star Wars mythos. The EU continued prosperously and eventually therewere hundreds of books and comics, all in different time periods of Star Wars history and the writers of each story made sure to uphold continuity to make sure everything was one cohesive story. The EU was even further expanded with the release of the Star Wars prequels, more books, comics and games would expand upon the new characters in the prequelmovies. The Star Wars ExpandedUniverse quickly becameone of the largest fictional universes in the world, among the likes of Tolkien and George R.R. Martin. Everything changed in 2012 when George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, announced he would be selling his company to Disney for 4.05 billion dollars. For two years fans were left speculating on what this would mean for the beloved storiesof the EU. It was in 2014 when the Expanded Universe was deemed “non canon” and rebranded as “legends”. All in progress projects in the EU timeline were canceled indefinitely as Disney wanted a clean slate to make their own movies, books and shows in the Star Wars universe without being beholden to what came before. So how are these two universesdifferent? Perhaps the most glaringdifference is the treatment of the main 3 characters, Han, Luke and Leia. In the EU they are a connectedand close family who are ever involved in some sort of adventure to save the galaxy, whereas in the Disney universe, all 3 take a backseat during events and are rarely ever seen. In the EU, Han and Leia are happily married with 3 children who all grow to become Jedi Knights under theiruncle Luke. DisneyStar Wars is the completeopposite, Han and Leia have a very tenuous marriage and only have 1 child who does becomea jedi but eventually becomesthe villain which destroysthe relationship of Han and Leia and forces Luke to go into a self imposed exile for 30 or so years, which is the premise of the more recent Star Wars films. Another difference would be how the Star Wars media is presented, the EU was mainly books, comics and video games, which can make new fans feel intimidated since not everyone is a reader or gamer. The Disney Star Wars mediais a lot more accessible to the commonconsumer with a wide variety of live action and animated shows as well as books, comics and games. There is a large difference in quality though. While the EU told large sweeping story lines that covered a wide swath of history, Disney Star Wars is a more confined story for the most part, focusing on a core group of characters and one singular plot line. Continuity is another key difference I would like to highlight between these two universes. The EU prized continuity above all else, with the authors going to great lengths to keep every EU story consistent with the others to form one cohesivestory. There were a few hiccups during the EU’s tenure but any continuity error was swiftly addressed and corrected in a future story via retconning, which meansto retrospectively correctan error by introducing a new explanation on previously established events. The main reason for Disney doing away with the Expanded Universe was so that they could make one singular storyline where everything fit together without contradicting another story. This worked for a while, however in the past few years, their regard for continuity has significantly dwindled. Tenaciouswriters hired by Disney have contradicted alreadyestablished works and these contradictions seemingly never get amended. The Expanded Universe and the Disney Star Wars Universe couldn’t be more different but how are they similar? One big example of a similarity between the two would be the storyline of Han and Leia’s son, in both timelines they start out as a hopeful Jedi but ultimately turn evil and become tyrants. Additionally, the now evil Solo child is thwartedby a young Jedi woman in both timelines as well. Another parallel between the EU and Disney Star Wars is the goal to be one cohesive storyline and uphold the continuity, despite only the Expanded Universe succeeding in this goal the majority of the time. Both universes are also similarin regards to how GeorgeLucas views them. Neither timeline was what George had envisioned for his universe. George had outlines of what he imagined for his continuation of Star Wars but it never came to fruition. Ultimately both the Expanded Universe and Disney Star Wars Universe are different and similar in a myriad of ways. However the validity of both can never be debated and the love for each that fans have is undying. It is entirely up to each fan to decide which Star Wars timeline they prefer. I personally favor the Expanded Universe, as I believe the stories told are of higher quality with a lot more nuance and substanceto them compared to the Disney Star Wars timeline. Whether you prefer the Expanded Universeor the Disney Star Wars, both timelines will continue to be cherished by millions of fans around the world for many years to come.
